Sambalpur ( Western Orissa) is the land of a unique handloom product on cloth. The Sambalpuri cloth is warp and weft and tie-dyed before weaving. The style consist of the tradition of like Shankha (shell), Chakra (wheel), phulla (flower) with deep symbolism, but the highpoint of these cloths are traditional craftsmanship of the 'Bandhakala', the tie-dye art reflected in their intricate weaves, also known as Sambalpuri " Ikkat”. In this technique, the threads are first tie-dyed and later woven into a fabric, with entire process taking many weeks.
